Wrote... I'm so tired. Tired of being angry. What is wrong with our education system. Overpaid teachers are always on strike. Perfectly safe playgrounds are torn down. Perhaps our mayor should consider rebuilding our playgrounds instead of developing the waterfront for the olympics. After the olympics, the city will just be left with a ton of debt and we still won't have any playgrounds. Maybe we should just skip the olympics and give our kids a place to play again.

Wrote... OK, so they tore down all the playgrounds. Now everyone is concerned with how much NEW playground equipment will cost. Has anyone ever considered , Where is all the stuff that got tore down? And why can`t they put up some of the stuff that is still in good condition? Where is all the OLD payground equipment today? Lets get some answers to these questions.

Wrote... I remeber my days at Denlow, and I always will. Reading old "all about me books" I wrote in grade four or five, It says my favourite subject, like most kids, was recess. Now I am in highschool and I remeber my days at Denlow, and I miss them so much, I don't have recess anymore, and i don't get time everyday to go to the playground and pretend I am on a Pirates Ship, or some other adventure. I don't get to swing on the swings for 15 minutes everyday, and pretend I can reach the sky. Everyone deserves that opportunity, you're only a "liitle kid" once. So, if you can help, do!

Wrote... I've heard that there has already been an accident (broken arm) on one of the new "SAFER" playgrounds! So much for safety! When this is all over, I'd really like to see some statistics comparing the accident rate of the new playgrounds to those of the old playgrounds--with statistics from about 3 years ago for the old playgrounds (since some schools had to close them for safety reasons about two years ago, the statistics from three or four years ago would be more realistic).
I would also like to see parents take responsibility to ensure that their children behave properly on the equipment and are dressed appropriately for playground fun (i.e., no hood cords, no loose coat/pant belts, appropriate footwear). Perhaps parents should be re-educated on playground safety issues.
And, why is the board using non-union installers? The rules keep changing...the prices keep going up...our school has been fundraising for two years now...the closer we think we are to having enough money and the financial support from our partners, the more hurdles they put in our path. My child isn't going to benefit from the installation of a new primary playground at our school, but let's get on with it---our primary children need a place to play!

I only wish we could impose stronger sanctions on the people who made this appauling decision.

Wrote... Yes. I will send you money, as I hope many others will, if only to show that we are responsible parents WHEN CONSULTED. I really hope it will also be a reassurance to anybody at the origin of this mess that we will be VERY responsible when comes the time to vote again. We need leaders who are truly inspired to create, not destroy; and whose only fear would be to be ridiculously inefficient.

Wrote... In the articles that I have read in the paper and scrolling through some of the messages on this site, no where do I see mentioned the fact that many parents at different schools already raised money for the play structures that that the Toronto District School Board had torn down with no plans or money in the works to replace them. What I would like to know is what will happen in 5 or 10 years when the Canadian Standards Association revises its play structure safety standards again? Will the play structures again be torn down and the school board feign innocence and think that, once again, parents will raise more money? The lack of planning is what really galls me. And for those who are not aware of this fact, daycares are required by the Ministry of Community & Social Services to have a play structure in order to retain their licenc under the Day Nurseries Act (they do have up to 4 years to replace the structures). And, the Min. of Community & Soc. Services also is requiring play structures to be up to the new standards.
My school does not want to raise money AGAIN for a play structure - they did it once already.

Wrote... From the responses that I see here, it seems that the Toronto Board of Ed is responsible for the removal of the playgrounds. From what I am lead to believe is that the Canadian Standards Association has updated their safety code. (Please be aware that the CSA also dictates safety standards for the workplace) Hence, several playgrounds were not up to safety standards and were taken down. Newmarket, just north of TO has had to deal with their playgrounds being ripped up for the past 2 years. what are they doing ??? The Town is willing to budget up to $20,000 per replacement on a matching dollar for dollar basis with school fundraising. The board, for their part is willing to fund up to $10,000 for the site preparation. The school councils and the Parent Liason Groups are the driving forces, appealing to the local business and the community for donations.

Wrote... Anyone without their head in the sand knows that the real danger in shoolyards (both physically and psychologically) is bullying - not playground equipment. I would far rather my kid came home with a skinned knee than having suffered the humiliation, fear, and pain of getting beaten up in the schoolyard by bullies who have nothing better to do now that the playground equipment is gone. If it were lawsuits the board was afraid of then why didn't they demand that parents sign waivers allowing their kids to use the equipment until the new equipment was phased in over the next two or three summers. To just sneak in and tear them all down without so much as consulting the communities affected was absolutely rediculous.

Wrote... The Toronto district school board would be put to the proper discrace they fully deserve if they didn't have so many fools clamering for a chance to "do something for the kids" on their behalf. This entire "ordeal" was soley their fault. Why didn't they consult ? because they are arrogant. We would all do well to treat this as a lesson in the genuine problems of the educational system. The teachers have gained so much power because their union is so rich, they exist only to make them more money, they shouldn't care about playgrounds, it's not their job GET YOUR NOSE OUT OF IT. SHUT UP AND TEACH ! do pilots have any say about the plane ? No they just fly it, because it's their job. When the kids ask why this happened, the school board was the only one involved in the decision. That is the truth, no "A plus" for saving chidrens lives.... You fools just bought Mike Harris my vote, and it tool a lot; 12 MILLION DOLLARS !

Thank you for taking the initiative to say and do what many of us are feeling and wondering how to do. We'll be making a donation. We wish we had the resources to make it more and are incensed that we have to make any donation in order for our children to be able to play in restored playgrounds.

As a result, we have formed a 'Playground Committee' and are looking to this site as the basis to raising money for a new playground. We will also present this to the Toronto School board. And, I too will make a contribution!
